Stephen A. Vaughn MD PhD

Dr. Stephen A. Vaughn is an Internal Medicine Physician at the VAMC in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is a board certified internist with broad experience in basic and clinical sciences, ranging from primary care to intensive care. He is also an active Ambulatory Care representative to LGBTQ outpatient sponsorship of America’s veterans, and member Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee. He currently participates in preparing and implementing VA-specific planning and treatment for Veterans with COVID-19 and other health needs.

Prior to joining the VA in Albuquerque, Dr. Vaughn was the Medical Director at Central Albuquerque Treatment Center where he conducted medical-assisted treatment of people with opiate dependency disorders. He also served as the Chief Medical Administrator at New Mexico Corrections Department.

 

His interests and specialties include diabetology with new medication approaches, postoperative diabetes management, management of end- stage cardiomyopathy, management of mild to moderate liver failure and management of end-stage (predialysis) renal failure, end-of-life care, medicolegal aspects of competency and guardianship, as well as the diagnosis, treatment, and planning of dementia care. Other subspecialty interests include rheumatology, neurology and medication-assisted treatment.

Dr. Vaughn received his B.S. in Chemistry and Biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his M.S. in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of California, Irvine and his M.D. from Boston University.
