Vice President Cynthia L. Gibert, MD, MSc

Cynthia L. Gibert, MD, MSc has been on the medical staff at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Washington, DC for over 17 years. In 2006, Dr. Gibert was pleased to join the Board of NAVAPD. Dr. Gibert is an attending physician in infectious diseases and medicine, and is currently the Director of Special Projects in the Medical Service. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at George Washington University. For over ten years, she was the Assistant Chief of Infectious Diseases and Director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic.

Dr. Gibert is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine and received her residency training in Internal Medicine at the Washington Hospital Center. She completed an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the Washington, DC VAMC and the Washington Hospital Center. As a graduate NASA pre-doctoral fellow at the Catholic University of America, she had previously received a master's degree in theoretical physical chemistry.

In addition to her clinical activities Dr. Gibert has been involved in numerous HIV-related clinical trials and research projects. She is currently the site Principal Investigator for the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS). In addition to this study and several other ongoing research studies of which she is the site Principal Investigator, Dr. Gibert also serves on both the Institute for Clinical Research Board and the Investigational Review Board at the Washington DC VA Medical Center.

Dr. Gibert has been an invited member of several Central Office taskforces and advisory groups. She is presently serving on a taskforce, under the auspices of the Office on the Medical Inspector, reviewing infectious diseases-related issues in VA long-term care facilities. Most recently she has also been an invited member of the national VA MRSA Taskforce organized by Patient Care Services in Central Office. This taskforce is implementing a VA-wide program to reduce nosocomial methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections.

Dr.Gibert is the current President of the VA Society of Practitioners of Infectious Diseases (VASPID) and a member of the national VA ID Field Advisory Group. She is the past President of the Greater Washington Infectious Diseases Society and the National Cathedral School Alumnae Association where she was also served as member of the Board of Trustees. She is a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Dr. Gibert has authored numerous scientific publications and presentations.
