Tribute to Kenneth Becker, M.D.

One of NAVAPD’s founding members recently passed away. Below is a tribute by NAVAPD President, Samuel V. Spagnolo, M.D.

I will remember Dr. Kenneth Becker as a friend and a colleague of more than 50 years.  Dr. Becker had been Chief of Endocrinology for several years when I arrived at the Washington, DC VA Medical Center as Assistant Chief of Medicine in 1972.  Over the years, Ken and I collaborated on many personal and professional issues.  Throughout his career, he was lauded as an outstanding teacher, researcher, and clinician.  His lectures were always informative and entertaining.  Since his retirement several years ago, I have felt his absence more so then than those of many who have left before or since.

One day while sitting in my office in 1976, Ken said we needed to start a VA professional organization; shortly thereafter NAVAPD was born.  Just as Ken Becker dedicated his career to aiding our veterans, fifty years on NAVAPD strives daily to ensure our veterans receive the best medical care, while also giving voice to the thousands who provide that care.

Perhaps, as a tribute to Ken and those like him, you will join your NAVAPD colleagues and help continue their legacy of service, dedication and commitment to our military service members.

Samuel V. Spagnolo, M.D.

President NAVAPD
