Robert T. Rubin, M.D., Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He also was Chief of the Department of Psychiatry at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System from 2005 to 2013, and now continues his clinical work at the VA.

Prior to these appointments, from 1992 to 2005, he was Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Professor of Neurosciences and Professor of Psychiatry at the Drexel University College of Medicine, Allegheny General Hospital Campus, Pittsburgh, PA. Prior to joining the Allegheny system, he was Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences in the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Rubin completed his residency in Psychiatry at UCLA in 1965 and then joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor. He spent two years in the Navy, 1967-69, and one year at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, 1971-72, as Professor of Psychiatry. He returned to UCLA as Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences in 1972.

As a clinician, Dr. Rubin was board-certified in Psychiatry in 1968. He has participated continuously in academic clinical activities, including conducting seminars on neuroendocrinology and psychopharmacology for house staff in psychiatry, neurology, and neurosurgery; being discussant at clinical case conferences; supervising psychiatric house staff in patient care; and being in part-time clinical practice.

As a neuroscientist, Dr. Rubin received a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Southern California in 1977, with an emphasis on neuroendocrinology. He has been an active researcher, having had continuous extramural support, for 45 years, including having held an NIMH research grant for 29 years. Dr. Rubin's main research interest has been the neuroendocrinology of affective disorders. He has published 275 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

Dr. Rubin is past President of the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology, and he served for 11 years as Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Psychoneuroendocrinology, 1981-1992. Among his many professional memberships, Dr. Rubin is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
